My journey in Cape Town College was not really easy first of all because my level English was low compare to other student. I couldn’t understand the lecturers properly and I had problems with writing. The second thing was it wasn’t really easy for me to socialise with other student because I was feeling embarrassed of my level of English. With time I started making some friends that was helping with assignment and other works in class. Being in college helped me to understand myself especially what I was able to do and discovering my talent. Normally in college the program require everyone to start with an introduction of the course for six month for the students to be able to discover themselves. I had five subject: drawing, painting, photography, and business. After that, six months of introduction to the course. From there each student had to choose between arts, graphic design or print making.
Being in introduction, with time I discovered that my drawing and painting skills was really good. From there I started understanding what I was able to do and working more to improve my skills with the help of my lecturers. After my introduction I chose graphic design but I didn’t really know what it was all about. Within a year and half I started understanding the course. Basically graphic design works with photography which was also part of my subject.
As graphic designer’s student we had to learn how to use some computer programs such as illustrator, Photoshop ,InDesign ... we had to take some pictures according to the brief that was given to us and edit them on Photoshop then make posters. My two years in graphic design made me understand myself and gave me an idea about design and art in general. I basically went to college because my application was rejected by the university simply. I had no idea of what the requirement was to apply for design at the university, but while studying in college my only wish was to study in a big institution (university).
