The Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo also known as DR Congo or simply, Congo is the country situated in the central Africa. It is sometimes referred by it former name of ZAIRE, which was its name between 1971 and 1997 under the former president Mobutu, the DR Congo shares borders with nine different countries.

The central Africa republic and south Soudan to the north, Uganda, Ruanda, Burundi, and Tanzania to the east where there’s always war going on. The reason for the chaos on the east side of Tanzania is to get some of the precious minerals; such as Coltan that we use in our cell phones. Coltan is a dull metallic mineral which is a combination of colombite and tantalite and which is refined to produce tantalum,

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the world’s largest producer of coltan, it’s also called BLOOD COLTAN (Giunta, 2013

Because is a source of conflict zone, this precious mineral (coltan) makes it possible to build smaller electronic gadgets like smart phones and tablets. It is also essential in powering a new trend of military applications such as drones. It is most likely a coltan shortage could intensify violence again which directly and indirectly affects people in the eastern areas of the DRC.

The eastern side of the DRC is the richest source of Colton in the world, with an estimated eighty percent of the world’s Colton reserves. Competition for minerals has a direct effect on the relentless violence in the region. Women and young girls have been among visible victims of the conflict and hundreds of thousands of them have been raped by opposing warring factions as a weapon of war.

Zambia to the south and Angola to the south west, and the republic of the Congo and Atlantic Ocean to the west. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the second largest country in Africa after Algeria, (the largest in sub Saharan Africa) by area and the eleventh largest in the world. With the population of over 78 million, it is the most populated officially francophone country, the fourth most populated country in Africa and the 16th most populated country in the world. The capital city is called Kinshasa the largest city, the official language is French, and national languages are Lingala, Kikongo, Swahili, and Tshiluba. Democratic Republic of Congo had the Independence Day on the 30 Jun 1960 and the current president is joseph Kabila Kabange.

In the republic democratic of the Congo culture is the most evident in the well-preserved tribal and ethnic traditions of the Congolese, as well as in the music the music we play infused with French, Arab and African roots. The Congolese people follow a variety of religious beliefs, but the majority of the population is either catholic or protestant.
